History of Finland
Henrik Meinander
(Kitabıstan)
How did a poor nation eventually build a welfare state that could withstand great pressure? To answer this question, Professor Henrik Meinander studied the economic, social and cultural structures and resources of Finland, and summarized the results of his research and wrote "History of Finland".
Great power conflicts and technological advances have undoubtedly had a lasting and fundamental impact on the development of Finland. But the effect of this chain reaction can only be explained by fully understanding the existing social conditions. Unlike traditional history books, in "History of Finland" a larger part of the text is dedicated to the history of the 20th century. This is not a coincidence. It was at that time when Finland clearly became a political entity with its own social system. Before then, decisions on regional political and economic issues were made mainly in Stockholm and St. Petersburg.
Therefore, there is every reason to describe the history of Finland before the 20th century as part of the history of Sweden and Russia. Relations with these countries, of course, are evaluated in the book from several aspects. Nevertheless, it can be assumed that the reader of the 21st century will be particularly interested to know to what extent the Swedish and Russian heritage in Finland continues, or to what extent this heritage has been modified or limited since the country became independent in 1917. Today's Finland is above all the result of this metamorphosis.
Professor H.Meinander wrote the book "History of Finland" not as a traditional historical text, but in a literary style, focusing only on important events and persons. However, none of the events and persons who had an impact on the transformation of Finland into today's welfare state have been ignored.
